Back in August 2020, End Homelessness California DBA the Shower of Hope launched Hope Housing for Students, a first of its kind program to help end youth homelessness in Los Angeles and beyond.
Approximately 60% of all community college students are either experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. Whether it means bouncing from friends’ couches every week, to sleeping in your car, the housing crisis for community college students is a major barrier in poverty reduction, and ensuring that our most vulnerable have an opportunity to succeed out of the poverty trap they find themselves in. In partnering with local community colleges in LA County, we aim to not just provide a bed for students who need it the most, but provide them the critical & wraparound services to ensure their academic and professional success. Whether it is through group and individual therapy sessions to nutritional needs, we provide the resources that students need to succeed.
As the pandemic begins to slow down and the demand in in-person learning grows, we aim to continue expanding our program to address the needs of LA Community College students. While we are only at our 6 month mark, we’ve seen immense progress – from a few of our early students enroll and transfer to a 4 Year University program, to seeing a 72% increase in the number of GPA credits passed, we have found a formula that delivers tangible results for students who need it the most.
We currently operate 2 different housing locations for students – our Casa del Sol location in Rosemead, and our Maryvale location near Rosemead / Alhambra. We aim to add a third location this year, and continue expanding our capacity to help serve students who need it the most.
